I agree that the RT contests can be a bit spammy at times especially if you have no value to offer your network post contest completion. I do believe, however, if your goal for the contest is to gain a bigger following, RT type contests bare more fruit in that department because participation is easier than say making a snow angel. Interesting post, Mike. I wouldn’t be too quick to jump to the idea of making it easy and suggesting a RT promotion. Those quickly can become spammy (with very little value to brand or others in the participants’ social networks.) I actually don’t think 313 participants is so bad–you got content, you got involvement, and you but much higher engagement than someone merely clicking the “retweet” button!

I think one lesson may be that Social Media promos don’t need to be Social Media only! Combining that idea with a small media buy (perhaps even featuring the photos you received) might’ve jump started the participation considerably.

Just me two cents. Great post!
